Headlining with poetry and works presented by artists commissioned by Stroud Against Racism, and a DJ set by JagP of Global Beats as part of Stroud Love Music Hate Racism including live performance by electronic duo Wooolheads.
Supported with exhibiting works by resident artists Albie Lucas, Caitlin Buckley, Marcus Morgan, Lensmen, John Davie, founder Zac Walsh And Caroline Jaine.
A special collection of work on show by Caroline Jaine is entitled “Suspicious Circumstances” and relates to her interest in true crime, perception and human behaviour.
Also on show will be “Open Up Your Eyes”; celebrating the coming-together of voices, with poetry from esteemed Ronnie McGrath and Patricia Camp, paintings by Rizpah Amadasun, Mali McGrath and Junk Baby (Ismiah Martin and Rochelle Johns), and make-up artistry from Halima Malek. These artists convey their experiences of racial injustice with striking imagery and poetry; expressing self, Black identity, reactions to wearing a hijab when face covering has become the norm, and powerful expressions of their realities.
Poets who will be performing on the night will be:
- Halima Malek - a poet, artist and make-up artist, working in Gloucestershire. Co-creator of the She Spoke poetry group and 'Stitch in Time' project, plus current associate on the Women Leaders South West scheme.
- Ronnie McGrath - (aka ronsurreal) is a socially conscious visual artist, neo-surrealist poet and novelist, plus a lecturer in creative writing.
- Tish Camp - Tish Camp is a published poet & writer of Trinidadian, Irish heritage. Originally from London, she lives in Gloucestershire UK, is a widow, theatre director and experimental artist with her uncensored works at The Poet Mouth. She performs internationally.
As LMHR says : "Racism seeks only to divide and weaken us. Lets use the energy of our music scene to celebrate diversity and involve people in anti-racist activity."
As Junk Baby has painted on their artwork : Don’t consider me a minority. Open up your eyes and maybe you’ll see. I am not my hair, I’m not my skin, I am not your expectations.
So come listen to this meeting of words and music, spend time with the artwork and enjoy the energy.
